Application of fundamental-mode cutoff for novel amplifiers and lasers

Abstract

Depressed-cladding fibers with fundamental-mode cutoffs provide high distributed losses at long wavelengths and low losses at short wavelengths. ASE suppression at 4-level transitions enables gain on shorter-wavelength, 3-level transitions. We discuss applications to Er-, Tm-, Nd-, and Yb-doped fiber amplifiers.
