Received Signal Strength Measurement Techniques for NRZ Waveforms

Abstract

Measuring the received signal power in an optical signal chain poses a unique challenge to optoelectronic design engineers. Given the large variety of signaling methods, data-rates and coding schemes, it’s difficult to adopt a one- size-fits-all solution that provides optimum accuracy and fast response time. Often it is necessary to provide a custom solution tailored around a pre-existing receiver front-end, forcing power detection electronics to be applied in a benign manner that will not interfere with data reception. This usually requires direct monitoring of the bias current, or RF power detection at the output of the front-end transimpedance amplifier. Several received signal strength indication (RSSI) measurement circuits will be discussed with a summary of performance trade-offs.
