Abstract

In Japan, high-speed Internet market has been growing rapidly. ADSL has been playing a leading role in delivering high-speed Internet access service, so far. A severe competition between new players other than telecommunication carriers brought a higher-speed service to be a central issue in the competition. As a result, higher-speed ADSL services have been widespread successively. At present, 24Mbps service is a major service in ADSL. Higher-speed competition has also been leading FTTH market. Many players from various industries such as power suppliers and real estate companies have joined in the FTTH market. The number of FTTH users surpassed 688 thousands at the end of last September.
