Merits of Low-Density WDM Line Systems for Long-Haul Networks

Abstract

We show that 20-wavelength WDM links can cost 64%–79% of the cost of 80-wavelength links and still be competitive due to future cost reductions, non-uniform network capacities and span maintenance support. We reason why this cost reduction is feasible.
