BER validation of ring-doping cladding-pumped EDFAs for dense WDM applications

Abstract

Recent results have shown the high power performance enabled by the use of ring erbium-doped double-clad fibers.1 A 30% optical power conversion efficiency (PCE) had been reached with this technique which consists of locating the dopant in a ring surrounding the signal core and where interaction with the dopant is ensured by the tails of the signal beams that lie outside the signal core. This high optical efficiency combined with the much reduced power consumption of multi-mode pumps give rise to outstanding reduction in power consumption (and size) compared to current amplifiers. In addition, contrary to an Er/Yb/P codoped fiber which cuts the C band under 1535 nm, the Yb-free doped fiber that is used allows to reach high output power in the whole C band, therefore between 1528 nm and 1563 nm.
