Abstract

In WDM systems, the minimum granularity of all-optical connections is often a single wavelength. Thus the electronic layer must be used for any further sharing of optical bandwidth. All-optical connections using all-optical packet switching may be preferable since optical-to-electronic- to-optical conversion is expensive.
