Statistical Properties of Polarisation Dependent Gain in Fibre Raman Amplifiers

Abstract

The gain of a Raman amplifier is sensitive to the relative orientation between the polarisation states of the pump and probe light within the transmission fibre. In the case of Raman amplifiers with long lengths of optical fibre, the Raman gain in a fibre with random birefringence becomes the average of the parallel and perpendicular gain coefficients. There is widespread use of depolarised pumping through polarisation scrambling or orthogonally multiplexed pumping to provide Raman gain using single-mode silica transmission fibres. Although the Raman gain achieved will be below the maximum values which could be achieved when both pump and probe fields have the same polarisation state, this reduces the detrimental effects of polarisation dependent gain.
