Ultra-robust optical routing by digitally encoded SCM label

Abstract

Optical packet switching and burst switching are attractive technologies for increasing network resource utilization such as wavelength path, and will offer fine-granularity routing service to clients.1,2 The optical labelling technique without high-speed electrical termination is essential to realize such optical packet/burst switching networks, and is the key to optical signal routing directly in an optical layer. The sub-carrier modulation (SCM) technique is especially suitable for the optical labelling in terms of cost effective optical label receiver fabrication. From optical transport performance point of view, 3R (Reshaping, Retiming and Regenerating) function at the routing node is necessary to avoid an accumulation of waveform distortion. So far, a SCM labelling technique based on sub-carrier signal generation by digital encoding of particular bit pattern at payload bit-rate has been reported.3,4 This technique provides end-to-end transparency in large-scale optical networks containing 3R functions, while conventional SCM label superimposed on the optical envelope is opaque to 3R function. In a large-scale end-to-end data transport system, robustness for the optical label in order to preserve assured optical routing is required. However, no investigation in terms of the robustness of optical label is reported so far.
