Abstract

As the ever-increasing demand for extra capacity and longer transmission distance pushes the technologies to the limit, there is a growing interest to address some of the system impairments at the transmission fiber. The concept of a dispersion-managed transmission span consisting a positive and a negative dispersion fiber section offers the promise of highly accurate in-line chromatic dispersion control, eliminating the need of an in-line dispersion compensating module (DCM) and the associated PMD. In conjunction with distributed Raman amplification, it offers the possibility of a simpler and cost effective system solution. Laboratory demonstrations1,2 and simulation comparison3 at 40 Gb/s have already highlighted the potential value of this combined approach. To date, the key issue centers on the optimal distribution of the large-effective-area positive dispersion fiber (PDF) and the small-effective-area negative dispersion fiber (NDF) section to harvest these benefits. In this paper, we report experimental results on the comparative evaluation of two dispersion management schemes in a 500 km 16-channel 40 Gb/s transmission link with Raman-assisted amplification. Our result confirms that the composite PDF-NDF-PDF span configuration exhibits superior performance in system Q and tolerance to non-linearity over the simpler PDF-NDF arrangement.
