Abstract

The “Optical Internet” employing the concept of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and wavelength routing has been touted as the Inter-net backbone of the future.1 In such a network, the network link layer connections are “dedicated” wavelengths on a WDM optical fiber directly connected to a high performance network router. In order to realize the IP-over-WDM paradigms, photonic switching plane and its control protocols in photonic routing nodes become indispensable between IP layer and underlying photonic transport layer.
