Abstract

A 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero (RZ) transmission has been successfully achieved over 500 km using standard fibers (non dispersion shifted fiber, SMF) and chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBG). We fabricated CFBGs with small group delay ripples, and achieved error free transmission (BER < 1×10−12) using these CFBGs for dispersion compensation.
