Abstract

Currently, the transport layer of carrier networks in the US is SONET based, configured in a Self- Healing Ring (SHR) topology. SONET technology, developed in the late 1980’s was designed to support the 64Kb/s-voice channel and data modems, and the existing PDH of DS1 and DS3. During the past several years, the demand for data services has grown exponentially while the voice service demand has grown linearly. Today, the transport network has evolved to a data centric network rather than voice centric, greatly increasing capacity demands on the SONET SHR network.
