Abstract

Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in optica] fibers is a major limiting factor for bit rates of 10 Gb/s and more. First-order PMD distorts the signal waveform because of a differential group delay (DGD) between two principal states of polarization defined in the fiber. The Fixed Delay Compensation (FDC) method [1], which employs a polarization controller and a polarization-maintaining fiber tuned to the system DGD at the receiver end, has been widely used to compensate DGD-induced waveform distortion.
