Abstract

The past two years have brought a dramatic increase in the complexity and capability of optical fiber transmission networks. Commercial networks have grown to tens of wavelengths at OC48 and DC 192 rates. As the networks become more complex, the need for switching functions in the optical layer becomes more and more evident.
