Abstract

As a consequence of the present growing of data-services, especially based on IP protocols the network operators have to look for migration paths which satisfy the actual traffic demand on one hand and which secure the investments for future upgrades on the other hand. Carefully designed WDM systems could fulfil that requirement by two different ways, the increase of the number of channels, and the increase of the bitrate per channel, respectively.
