Abstract

The first generation Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) based transoceanic systems were 5Gb/s, single channel system [1]. Just after these systems, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology became feasible, and the second generation optical amplifier systems stepped up to 2.5Gb/s, eight channels systems [2].
