Abstract

Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are promising candidates to upgrade standard optical fiber transmission systems that operate around 1.3 µm. 10-Gbit/s return-to-zero transmission up to 200-500 km was demonstrated1,2 where distances beyond 800 km should be achievable by a further optimization of the multiple quantum well (MQW) SOA design.
