High-performance optically amplified 1550-nm lightwave AM-VSB CATV transport system

Abstract

The integrity of an optically amplified 1550-nm lightwave AM-VSB CATV transport system is best judged by its performance with both passive and fiber link loss. The passive link performance depends on modulation index, noise of the optical amplifiers, and light sources. The fiber link performance deviates from the passive link performance due to optical nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion in the fiber. These effects include (1) the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)1; (2) the optical phase noise2; and (3) distortion due to self phase modulation (SPM) and chromatic dispersion (CD).3 We report a high-performance system that is suitable for passive link loss. In addition, the same system simultaneously eliminates the three aforementioned effects for long-span fiber-link applications.
