High-power optical amplifiers for commercial analog and digital applications

Abstract

Repeaterless transmission over 511 km of nondispersion-shifted (NDS) fiber and a total span power budget of 88.8 dB has previously been reported at 2.5 Gbit/s1 using forward error-correction codes and the use of remotely pumped post-and pre-amplifiers. However, repeaterless fiber-optic systems employing only commercial SONET OC-48 equipment and optical post-and pre-amplifiers are more feasible currently because they can be deployed immediately using off-the-shelf-equipment and without the (substantial) additional costs of building regenerator huts.
