WDM transmission measurements on installed optical amplifier undersea cable systems

Abstract

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission tests have been performed on recently installed portions of the Trans-Pacific Cable (TPC-5) and Trans-Atlantic Cable (TAT-12) systems to determine the upgrade capability of the undersea plant for each system. Tests were performed at various transmission rates up to 30 Gbit/s and at distances up to 16800 km. The installed undersea plant on which these tests were performed were segment G of TPC-5, and subsegment E1 of TAT- 12. Both TPC-5(G) and TAT-12(E1) contain four trarrsmission fibers (two for each direction), and are designed to operate at 5 Gbit/s on a single-wavelength carrier. The portions under test were wholly supplied by AT&T Submarine Systems, Incorporated (AT&T-SSI).
