Abstract
One major source of impairment in very long wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems is the nonflat frequency response of the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), which leads to optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation of some of the channels. A simple technique to ameliorate this impairment has been proposed1 and demonstrated.2 The optical SNR at the output can be equalized by adjusting the input powers of each channel.
