Abstract
We have recently demonstrated the first room-temperature continuous-wave operation of vertical-cavity lasers (VCLs) operating at 1.54 μm.1 These lasers are excellent candidates for fiber-to-the-curb applications because of the low-cost packaging and testing advantages of VCLs. Furthermore, the 1.5-μm VCLs can be combined with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) for long distance applications and for broadcasting systems.
