Abstract

In all-optical network (AON) applications, the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format at relatively low bit rates is preferred to the return-to-zero (RZ) format because of reduced electronic bandwidth requirements and greater timing tolerance. Long-haul high bit rate systems of the future, however, will be based on short pulse transmission (e.g., soliton transmission) corresponding to RZ format.1,2 Bit-rate enhancement between network nodes is therefore desirable to increase the network throughput. The conversion of low bit rate NRZ signals into high bit rate RZ signals is a key process to interface AON with high speed transmission systems. In this presentation, we demonstrate a nove1 method of converting all-optical NRZ format to RZ format using a walk-off balanced nonlinear fiber loop mirror (WBNFLM). In this scheme, the pulse width of the converted RZ signal, i.e., duty cycle, can be adjusted easily according to bit rates and timing tolerances, which is required in the high speed transmission systems.
