Abstract

Active soliton control through synchronous regeneration through modulators such as LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnders,1 Kerr fiber2 or electroabsorption modulators3 has been demonstrated. These correspond to intensity, phase, or combined intensity/ phase modulation. Here, we propose for modulators two- wavelength nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) driven by an optical sinusoidal clock. Apart from being polarization-independent, NOLMs exhibit Terahertz speed potential. The performance of a B = 20 Gbits/s soliton link with periodical NOLM regenerators is evaluated through numerical integration of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation; it is found to be higher than that obtained with pure intensity modulators. The improvement is attributed to the NOLM additional phase modulation, which reduces soliton interactions.
