Abstract

Elongation of repeater span of WDM system could be realized by increasing a repeater output power. This is, however, limited by nonlinear channel interactions such as four wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM). In addition, pump power available from a laser diode is another limiting factor. Using 5 Gb/s 8-channel 4500 km straight line test bed, we demonstrate that nonsoliton RZ transmission can mitigate these limitations, and is, therefore, advantageous for a long haul WDM system.
