Abstract

Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) polarized orthogonal to a saturating signal experiences more gain than the same polarization as the saturating signal in Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs).1 A computer model of polarization-dependent gain (PDG) has been reported.2 It postulates that each ion has an ellipsoid-like surface representing the emission and absorption cross sections.3 By fitting the anisotropy parameter, the polarization-dependent gain difference of 120 mdB is explained well by the model EDFA with 5 dB gain compression.
