Abstract

Photonic frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) switching systems are expected to lead to large-capacity transport networks. We have proposed and demonstrated a photonic ATM switch architecture that uses FDM techniques; it is called FrontierNet.1,2 An optical buffer, which is an indispensable element in a photonic ATM switch, has also been demonstrated.3 This paper describes an experimental FDM optical-loop buffer and the bit-error-rate (BER) measurement of its stored packets.
