Two-channel WDM transmission upgrade experiment on the Americas-1N undersea system

Abstract

The Americas-1N system is a 2100-km erbium-doped-fiber-amplifier undersea system that connects Vero Beach, Florida, and the island of Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has two line pairs, each operating at 2.5 Gbit/s, with a single NRZ channel centered at 1558.5 nm. In this work we looped back one of the line pairs at Saint Thomas for a total system length of 4200 km, and we added a second 2.5-Gbit/s channel at 1557.5 nm to the already-operating line. This was done to demonstrate the potential for upgrading an installed undersea optical system by using WDM techniques at the terminals with no changes to the undersea plant.
