Abstract

Multiwavelength technology is now finding commercial acceptance for long-distance transmission, and so can switching and networking applications be far behind? We have seen a great deal of technical progress in recent years, particularly in improvements in our ability to individually manipulate and translate wavelengths, but how will all this technology make a difference to a communications customer or network operator? It must bring benefits that cannot be achieved, or at least not as effectively, with current technology.
