Abstract
Wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) networks are expected to play a major role in both long-haul communications as well as in the local loop (FTTL). One of the most pressing device issues for such systems is the question of an appropriate multi-wavelength source. Spectral slicing of broadband sources such as the ASE from Er-fiber amplifiers [1] or the supercontinuum generated from propagation of short pulses through fibers [2] has been suggested as WDM source. This approach provides precisely aligned channel wavelengths, but both the spectral slicing as well as the modulation is external to the laser cavity.
