Abstract

Wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) transmission at 1.55 µm is expected to greatly increase the channel capacity of CATV distribution networks. Although FM WDM has been proposed,1 AM is preferable owing to its compatibility with CATV systems. However, dispersion in 1.3-µm standard single-mode optical fiber (SMF) and the gain tilt of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) will significantly degrade second-order distortion.2
