Abstract

Recently, high-quality UV-written gratings have been demonstrated in Ge-doped planar silica waveguides for use as reflection filters' and as bandpass filters.2 One further attractive application of such gratings is their use as feedback elements in laser structures, as demonstrated in fiber form in a fiber laser1 or as part of an external cavity.4 By integrating a reflection grating in a planar silica waveguide with a semiconductor laser, we open up the possibility of hybrid integration of active and passive structures on a common substrate, where one could, for example, use simple semiconductor lasers, with the wavelength of operation being fixed by an external grating written into the silica waveguide. Very short cavity lengths are also possible in planar geometries,5 which in principle will allow very fast modulation rates. The first stage in such a process is the demonstration of the use of a reflection grating in a planar silica waveguide to lock up a semiconductor laser.
