Abstract

It has been demonstrated that large UV-induced refractive-index changes can be achieved in GeO2-doped optical fibers that have been sensitized by high-pressure H2 loading.1,2 It is also possible to achieve significant index changes in hydrogen-loaded fibers that are rapidly heated. We compare the index changes that can be achieved thermally or photolytically in both GeO2-doped and non-GeO2-doped fibers.
