A hitch-hiker’s guide to ATM

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is currently a very hot topic in the telecommunications world. We will look at where ATM came from, and why, on the grounds that this might shed some light on where it may be going. In the process we will collide with ATM switch design, stumble across LAN emulation, and come to grief over ATM congestion control.
