Abstract

With a view to developing the fiber-to-the-home network, we believe that single-star (SS) architecture has the highest potential because of its transparency. This means that it is possible to supply new services by changing the terminal equipment at each end. In other architectures, such as active double star and passive double star, the kinds of service are limited by the characteristics of electrical multiplexers or optical splitters. However, very-high-fiber-count cable is required when the SS architecture is used.
