XPM induced by residual intensity modulation in optical FSK-FDM heterodyne detection systems

Abstract

The cross-phase-modulation (XPM) effect will become serious in the realization of coherent optical frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) transmission. However, few papers on the use of XPM in coherent optical FDM transmission have ever been published.1,2 In this paper we experimentally and theoretically investigate, for the first time to our knowledge, the effects of XPM induced by the residual intensity modulation on the optical spectrum in coherent optical frequency-shift-keyed (FSK) FDM transmission systems. We measured the receiver sensitivity degradation caused by the XPM in a 2.5 Gbit/s four- channel transmission over 40 km of dispersion-shifted Fiber.
