Abstract
The self-filtering effect1 in cascaded Er-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is an important characteristic for long-haul transmission systems. It has been reported1–4 that the gain-peak wavelength strongly depends on Er-doped fiber (EDF) length and signal gain or repeater-span loss, suggesting that the optimum EDF length is determined exclusively by an operation wavelength and repeater-span loss. On the other hand, it has been shown4 that the gain-peak wavelength differs for different host- glass compositions of EDFs; however, dependence on A1 concentration in EDFs has not yet been fully examined. In this paper we report what we believe to be the first detailed analysis of Al-concentration dependence of the gain-peak wavelength in a wide range of Al concentrations from 0 to 3 wt. %, and we discuss optimization of EDFs to minimize the noise figure.
