Abstract

If ATM technology is to be successfully introduced into the customer premises, it must offer a LAN-like service for data traffic. Furthermore, this LAN service must be compatible with the existing installed base of IEEE 802.x LAN equipment. An ATM LAN segment must support routing and direct bridging (not remote bridging) between stations attached to itself and stations attached to other 802.x LAN segments (Figs. 1 and 2).
