Abstract

The broadly tunable semiconductor laser is a key device for optical systems that use wavelength-division multiplexing. Recently, we proposed and fabricated a superstructure-grating (SSG) distributed-Bragg-reflector (DBR) laser, and we observed a tuning range of over 60 nm. The SSG has a periodic superstructure created by a chirped grating, as shown in Fig. 1(a). Reflection spectra of SSG’s consist of side modes created by the structure. By selecting the lasing wavelength among the side modes, we can obtain broad wavelength tuning.
