Abstract

Erbium-doped optical fiber amplifiers are rapidly emerging as key components for future optical communications systems. Practical systems require high-power semiconductor lasers to pump the fiber amplifier at a wavelength of either 980 or 1480 nm. Efficient use of the pump power requires that the laser spectrum should be narrow, with the peak emission wavelength precisely controlled to match the wavelength of the fiber absorption band.
