Abstract

Among cable-television (CATV) companies, competition and the desire for increased revenues lead to a constant demand for increased channel capacity. Although multiple optical Fibers are available in most deployed fiber cables, it is clearly desirable to maximize the efficiency of use of each fiber. Wavelength-division multiplexing has been demonstrated as one option for increasing fiber channel capacity.1 Another approach, explored in this work, is to use one laser to broadcast two bands of channels, with the channels in the two bands using different modulation formats.
