Abstract

In current lightwave transport of AM-VSB CATV signals it is desirable to have the highest possible carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) while maintaining the highest possible linearity. In the absence of laser distortion the CNR achievable with satisfactory linearity is determined by the clipping distortion.1 However, the laser distortion plays an equivalently important role that reduces the CNR performance below what is achievable with clipping distortion alone. This paper addresses the critical interaction between laser and clipping distortion and their influence on the CNR performance. We demonstrated an 80-channel system that exhibits the expected ultimate system performance.
