Abstract

As still higher gains in erbium-doped fiber amplifiere (EDFAs) are reported (see, e.g., Ref. 1 reporting a gain of 49 dB), it becomes increasingly interesting to identify the ultimate limit to the gain in EDFAs and the causes for it.
