Abstract
The conventional noise theory of optical amplifiers (OAs), which is known as Shimoda, Takahashi. and Towns (STT) theory, deals only with lumped OAs, whereas actual OAs have nonuniform distributions of noise parameters. We have already reported a noise theory of OAs based on a one-dimensional distributed model.1 This paper presents a 3-D noise theory developed by extending the STT theory in a simple way. A noise analysis of an erbium-doped fiber-amplifier (EDFA) using this theory is also described.
