Abstract

Polarimetric fiber-optic sensors are a class of phase-modulated sensors that are an alternative to interferometric sensors for the detection of temperature, strain, acoustic and magnetic fields, and other measurand fields in applications where the ultrahigh sensitivity of the interferometric technique is not required. A difficulty with polarimetric configurations, however, is the demodulation or linearization of the measurand-induced modulation in the polarization-mode phase delay in situations where the sensor is required to operate passively and remotely from the detection electronics. Techniques for the demodula-tion of interferometricsensors based on laser frequency modulation have been adapted for use with polarimetric sensors.1
