Abstract

New applications using increasingly powerful hosts, work stations, and file servers are driving the demand for high-throughput communication networks. Hierarchical local area networks (LAN's), distributed processing environments with shared fine servers, real-time interactive visualization, fast document retrieval, image processing, seismic analysis, and remote sensing are some of these applications.
