Very low loss phosphorus-doped silica-on-silicon waveguides measured using a ring resonator

Abstract

Large integrated optical circuits (IOCs) require waveguide losses of ~0.1 dB/cm for low transmission loss. For applications that involve high-Q resonator modes, such as an integrated resonator for a ring gyro or an integrated external cavity laser, waveguide loss of less than a few dB/M is desirable. Previously, Verbeek et al., measured losses of 5 dB/M in phosphosilicate glass (p-glass) core waveguides by measuring fiber-to-fiber losses in straight waveguides cleaved to different lengths.1 Because of variations in coupling loss, it is difficult to extend this technique to provide reliable measurements of lower losses in straight waveguides.
