Abstract
Strictly speaking, the single-mode fibers currently being used for telecommunication applications are not purely single mode at 1300 nm. Accordingly, two modes with slightly different propagation constants can cause modal interference (MI) when a short fiber section (stub) or a pigtail fiber is inserted within a fiber link. The phenomenon has been extensively investigated1,2 because it is a potential source of modal noise.
