Abstract

Many lightwave applications involve polarization-dependent processing of a received signal with an arbitrary state of polarization (SOP). Methods previously used to overcome the resulting signal fading include polarization diversity1 and dynamic polarization scrambling, in which the SOP is forced to undergo extreme changes during a bit period.2
