Abstract

Wavelength switching devices are important for future photonic switching systems.1–3 From this point of view, we investigated wavelength bistability in a two-electrode distributed feedback (DFB) laser with strongly inhomogeneous excitation, demonstrating bistable wavelength switching between two longitudinal modes, we believe for the first time.1 In this laser, the effects of axial spatial hole burning and gain saturation cause the bistable wavelength switching.4 This mechanism suggests the possible use of this laser in high speed wavelength switching devices, since this switching is not accompanied by a large change in carrier density. We report successful observation of fast wavelength switching between two modes 1.7 nm apart, investigating the dynamics of switching characteristics of this device.
